Benfica bask in glory

It was a season of glory for Benfica Football Club, as the Actonville outfit’s u-13, u-15 and u-16 teams won two league titles and a league cup final in the Easterns League Football Association (ELFA).

The club has enjoyed incredible growth in their four years of existence.

Despite the fact that the u-13 team were playing catch up for most of the season, they clinched their title in the last match of the season, with an outstanding performance against JVW Academy, in Bedfordview.

Overall the team scored 99 goals and conceded 22 goals in the 22 games.

One of the highlights for Benfica and the club’s u-13 team was having the chance to meet His Serene Highness (HSH) Prince Albert II of Monaco, with whom they launched the Phillips Community Light Centre, at the club’s training ground, at Actonville Primary School.

Having performed brilliantly throughout the season, the u-15 team’s defence conceded only nine goals during the season, ensuring that they took the 2015 league title.

One of the u-15 players, Rahim Sibusiso Milazi was chosen at trials to represent ELFA at both district tournaments, which took place in Germiston and Durban.

He was also awarded his Easterns colours.

The team’s players also had an opportunity to meet former Bafana Bafana coach and winner of the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations, Clive Barker.

Having struggled throughout the 2015 season the u-16s finally got it right in their last game of the season, a league cup final against Sedibeng, where they dug deep and came back twice to clinch a 3-2 win in a dramatic match.
