Sunday success for senior teams

Sunday, November 29, was a good day for Benoni Northerns Cricket Club’s (BNCC) senior teams.

The club’s Premier, Promotion and Directors league teams all achieved winning results on the day.

The BNCC Premier League XI enjoyed the most painless and easiest of the results, with the total obliteration of their weekend opponents – a hapless Springs Old Boys at Pollak Park.

Bowling first, it was the “Stiaan Jordaan Show” with the ball.

The Northerns off-spin bowler accounted for six Springs scalps in 5.3 overs for just eight runs, as the woeful Springs batting order crumbled with just 42 runs posted on the board.

Jordaan was backed by Werner van Lingen (2/13 in five overs), Mark Robey (1/6 in five overs) and the left-arm seam of debutant Andrew Smith (1/11 in five overs).

Coach Thys van Lingen gave some of his younger chargers a chance higher up the order with the bat, to chase down the small target.

Vaughn Humphrey’s dim run with the willow continued as he failed for eight runs, while young Tristan Dunkerley was dismissed without troubling the scorers.

Stefan Jordaan (21 not out) took the team over the short line to secure an eight-wicket bonus point win for Northerns.

The win wraps up the first half of the 2015/2016 Eastern Premier League, with the team in third position on the standings.

  • Meanwhile, Jaco Kruger’s Promotion XI wrapped up a casual seven-wicket win away to log-leading CBC Old Boys.

Kruger’s team, packed with experience and quality, made light work of their hosts.

They bowled their opponents all out for 119 runs in 36.2 overs.

The skipper picked up 3/27 in 10 overs and was ably supported by Joshua Thomas (2/16 in eight overs), Jaryd Beer (2/23 in seven overs), Stefano di Bartolomeo (1/25 in nine overs), Charl Steyn (1/7 in two overs) and Matthew “Traddle” Wright (1/2 in 1.2 overs).

Northerns never looked to be in trouble in their chase, with Steyn setting the trend with a six and a four off the second and third deliveries of the innings.

Bruce Gilson, fresh off a transfer from Boksburg Cricket Club, made 39 in his debut match while Wright took the team home with 28 not out.

BNCC would chase the target down in 14.5 overs.

They will conclude the first half of their campaign with a match against Duduza, at home, on Sunday, December 6.

  • The club’s Directors XI defeated Kempton Park ‘B’ by four wickets on Sunday.

Ian Crawshaw led the charge with the ball, with figures of 6/35 in 10 overs, to bowl out their opponents for 168.

Northerns would chase down the score in 31.1 overs, with Xander Scheepers (85) starring with the bat.
