Former Kids Haven resident has big goals in MMA

Bokang Masuyane (21) is a mixed martial artist worth keeping an eye on.

The former Kids Haven resident, who represented South Africa in wrestling at last year’s Commonwealth Games, in Glasgow, Scotland, has taken to the cage like a fish to water and is making his name on the amateur MMA scene.

After winning his recent amateur fight against Christo Coskey by judges’ decision, at Fightstar 15, in Primrose, in the bantamweight division, the talented Masuyane has his sights set on turning professional and entering the EFC ranks.

The Midrand resident is as committed as it gets and he spends about six days per week training at the renowned Fight Fit Militia (FFM) gym, in Sunninghill, with the likes of Benoni EFC fighter JP Buys and UFC fighter Gareth “Soldierboy” McLellan.

“It is a huge honour for me to train at the best gym in the EFC,” he said.

“It’s great to have guys like Soldierboy around to give me motivation.”

With regard to his recent fight, Masuyane said he knew that Coskey had better length, long legs and better reach, so he had to turn to his wrestling skills, take his opponent’s legs and work on the ground.

On his time at Kids Haven, where he was admitted at the age of six, he said: “It provided the step towards a better future for me.

“It’s a place that takes you away from your troubles and makes you a better person.

“I started wrestling at Benoni Wrestling Club while I was at Kids Haven and, through wrestling, I got noticed and found a foster home.”

He added that he is extremely excited about what the future holds, starting with his short-term goal of strapping the Fightstar bantamweight title belt around his waist.
