Spurs get Springs in their steps

Following two straight defeats in the Eastern Premier League in as many weeks, Actonville Spurs Cricket Club’s (ASCC) Premier team welcomed a 165-run win over Springs Old Boys (SOB), at Lords Cricket Grounds, on Sunday, November 8.

Skipper Clayton August (back from semi-professional duty with Easterns) won the toss and elected to bat first.

It proved to be the right decision, with his opening pair of Ahmed Mohamed (84) and Curtley Weavers (79) starting like a house on fire.

They kept the scoreboard ticking at six runs to the over in the first 10 overs, with the team continuing at that rate until the end of the innings.

Mohammed and Weavers gave the team the foundation for a big score and, at one stage, a total of 300 was on the cards.

Intermittent losses of wickets did not allow that score to be reached, but a still impressive 270 all out in the last over of the innings was the result.

Springs Old Boys’ Guston van Heerden, with figures of 7/44 in nine overs, was the pick of the visiting side’s bowlers.

At the turnaround, SOB lost wickets at regular intervals and the young generation of Actonville bowlers came out on top.

Wilber van Dyk picked up figures of 3/23 in 9.1 overs, Kyle Lansberg 3/20 in eight overs and Mekyle Pillay 2/21 in seven overs, to bowl out the opposition for 105 in the 35th over, to ensure a bonus-point victory.

The team will feel rejuvenated and confident heading into the Benoni cricket derby, with Benoni Northerns, away from home on Sunday, November 15.
