Spurs bounce back at Willowmoore B

Following a tough day at the office against CBC Old Boys, on Sunday, October 11, Actonville Spurs Cricket Club’s (ASCC) Premier XI got things back on track with a 43-run bonus point victory over Tembisa, on Sunday, October 18.

Tembisa won the coin toss and elected to field on the usual sticky and slow Willowmoore  B-field wicket.

Actonville lost an early wicket, but enjoyed some steady and decent partnerships throughout the batting innings.

Although the deck was a difficult and tricky one on which to bat, the Actonville batting order showed welcome application.

Captain Clayton August returned to the side from provincial duty with the Easterns team and showed his worth with a knock of 49 runs, while debutant for the club Ridwaan Daya scored 24 runs.

Kyle Degamber (22 runs) and CJ van der Walt (21 runs) also chipped in as Actonville were bowled out for 199 runs.

After the lunch break Tembisa took to the crease, with Israel Hlengani (27) showing early aggression.

Fortunately for the ASCC bowling attack, the aggressive approach on a holding wicket worked against Tembisa.

Actonville’s bowlers stuck to their game plan and forced Tembisa into trouble, with the score at 102/7.

Lower order resistance came in the form of Howard Hareke (40 not out) and Vincent Harold (25 runs).

The two gave the Tembisan outfit a sniff of victory, but it wasn’t to be and they were eventually bowled out for 156.

August, Mekyle Pillay, Kyle Landsberg and Xolile Nkomo each picked up a brace of wickets to ensure the bonus-point win.

The victory was a pleasing return to winning ways for Actonville, after the last week’s poor showing.

  • In other results, the club’s Promotion XI lost to Benoni Northerns, while the Directors League side have a 100 per cent record, with three wins out of three in their campaign so far.

The Saturday Second League side defeated Nigel, the Third League side were winners over Boksburg A and the Fifth League side defeated Vosloorus.

“The club’s approach of sticking with youth, especially in the Sunday leagues, seems to be on the right track,” said club public relations officer Zunaid Seedat.

“It is still early days as far as predictions go, but the signs are encouraging and we are hopeful of a brighter future at that level.”
