Actonville clinch nail-biter

Actonville Spurs Cricket Club’s (ASCC) Premier XI started their 2015/2016 Eastern Cricket Union campaign with a nervy one-wicket away win, over newly promoted Boksburg, on Sunday, October 4.

Skipper Kyle Degamber won the toss and put their Boksburg opponents in to bat at PG Park.

The visitors started well and had their hosts two down for less then 30 runs.

Spurs continued to chip away at the Boksburg batting line-up, with wickets at regular intervals.

Actonville had them at 150/9 when bad fielding crept in.

This proved incredibly costly, as Boksburg’s tail wagged right at the end, with Ruan du Plessis’s 83 not out and Jeremy Wenton’s 40 steering them to a total score of 240 all out.

ASCC’s new signing, Wilber van Dyk, picked up a five-wicket haul (5/65) in his first premier match, while Farhaard Omarjee bagged a brace (2/22).

A solid opening partnership between Ahmed Mohammed (58), who continued his fine off-season form with the bat, and Degamber (74) set up the away side nicely, when an almost customary collapse of the batting order took place where Actonville lost eight wickets for a mere 50 runs.

The team were in trouble and in danger of the game slipping away from them, until Xolile Nkomo entered the fray and held his nerve to take the side to the win by a single wicket.
