Runners’ names entrenched in history

It was quite fitting that Comrades Marathon running legend Louis Massyn was the guest speaker at Benoni Northerns Athletics Club’s 2015 Comrades green number function, on Wednesday, September 16.

The 65-year-old Massyn has conquered the world’s oldest and largest ultra-marathon a mind-boggling 43 consecutive times and has also won a ludicrous 40 Two Oceans Marathon medals.

The feats of the Northerns road warriors who joined the prestigious Green Number Club this year might not fall into the same bracket as Massyn’s accomplishments, but they are truly impressive.

A Comrades permanent green number is awarded to a runner who has completed 10 races.

On Wednesday evening, the club unveiled the names on their Comrades Green Number achievements board, in the club’s Ladies’ Bar, of the runners who accomplished this daring deed this year.

Paul Pillay, Patrick Makhesha, Toni Da Matta, Sipho Dzingwa and Chantal Keyser (now living in Australia, but who completed her 10th race in Northerns’ colours), all received their green numbers, while club chairman Derek “Irish” Wright finished his 20th Comrades to earn his double green number.
