Gordinho strives to cement position

Kaizer Chiefs defender Lorenzo Gordinho (21) is hoping that the 2015/2016 Absa Premier Soccer League (PSL), which kicked-off this past weekend, is the one that catapults his career with last season’s league champions.

The former Benoni High School pupil is hoping to play an essential role in coach Steve Khompela’s team, as they strive to defend the title that they cruised to under Stuart Baxter, in the 2014/2015 campaign.

“The main goal for us [Kaizer Chiefs] is to retain the PSL title, as well as to adapt to all the new changes within the club, as we as adapt to the coach’s philosophy and style of play,” he told the City Times.

“Personally, I want to establish myself as a regular in the first team and progress further in my career.”

Gordinho, who has been involved in the Amakhosi set-up for four years, was recently elected onto the club’s captain’s committee, who will assist recently selected Chiefs skipper Siphiwe Tshabalala with leadership decisions.

As the youngest member of the committee he is thrilled that some of his leadership credentials have been noticed.

“It’s a privilege for me to be elected onto the captain’s committee,” he said.

“I want to mould myself into the role of being a captain and my inclusion in the committee is a big first step in the process.

“I think that I was included in the committee because of my leadership qualities, work ethic and discipline, as well as my abilities and performances on the field.”

On working under Komphela he commented: “Individually, Steve pushes me a lot and is extremely clear on the way he wants us [me] to play.

“He also allows me to use my own discretion, which creates a good balance between having the freedom to play and making the correct decisions on the field.”

Gordinho added that, for him, any match that Chiefs plays is an important, must-win game.

“That is the club ethic, but if we make it to any cup finals then those will be the games that I most look forward to participating in.”
