Women in motorsport join hands

The Women in Motorsport breakfast session was held at Carnival City on Friday, July 24.

According to Carol Weaving, managing director of Thebe Reed Exhibitions, the idea of the breakfast (held ahead of the all-women organised Gauteng Motor Fest at The Rock Raceway) is for women who are involved in motorsport to network.

“It is about profiling and generating awareness of women in motorsport,” she told the Herald.

“When I was involved in motorsport some 20 years ago [as a former director of the Automobile Association and Kyalami Race Track] there wasn’t an awful lot going on and now I think that the profile of women in motorsport has risen dramatically.

“We now have ‘celebrities’ such as Wilmarie Janse van Rensburg, who is extremely well known and quite hot in terms of motorsport at the moment.

“It’s phenomenal that we are now profiling these sportswomen and starting to grow the number of women in all the motorsport codes.

“This is the start of a networking legacy that we want to create with ourselves as organisers, the City of Ekurhuleni and Motorsport South Africa (MSA).”

She added that the aim is to get more youth into motorsport and to help them gain access to it.

“People are starting to take note of women in motorsport, starting to get their credibility and they are making their mark.”
