Youngsters show no mercy

Benoni Rugby Club welcomed East Rand United (ERU) to their Hoërskool Hans Moore home grounds on Saturday, July 18, for their second league clash in the space of a week.

It was the club’s u-21 young guns who again did the club proud as they obliterated their opponents 112-0, outscoring their oppenents by 18 tries to nothing.

Benoni showed no mercy and pushed up their point superiority in the league.

Takkies van Staden crossed the line on seven occasions while captain Arnold van den Bergh and JP Bryder each scored four tries.

Carel Nimb scored a hat trick, Jacques Carelse scored twice and Brendan Kruger dotted down once.

The Benoni second team felt that they were unlucky to lose 22-15 to ERU as they were in the game for a long period of time.

The Benoni first XV were their own worst enemies in their 45-33 loss to ERU, as they missed numerous first time tackles and gave possession away cheaply when they needed to hang on to the ball.

Soft tries at crucial stages turned the game in the favour of the visitors.

Riaan Matthee played an outstanding game, scoring two ties and being strong in defence, but it was not enough for the hosts.

Wing Arno Fourie and centre Jacques Dorfling also dotted down for Benoni.

The club will travel to Sasolburg on Saturday, July 25, for a crucial match to try and salvage a spot in the Valke Merlin League play-offs.
