Youngsters bag the sole victory

Benoni Rugby Club’s u-21 XV were again the shining lights for the club, when three teams travelled to Reiger Park to play East Rand United (ERU) in a Valke Merlin League clash.

Benoni’s first team performed well against an ERU side filled with contracted players.

The visitors kept ERU from scoring for a long period before the halftime break.

Morne Venter and Ruaan du Plessis scored for Benoni and Marius Bezuidenhout slotted a conversion and penalty, but the ERU team grew stronger and wrapped up the match with 29-15 in the late stages of the second half.

Benoni’s second team went down 31-12 to a strong ERU team, while the u-21s continued their excellent run this season, by defeating their opponents 76-12 (scoring 12 tries in the match).

Newcomer JP Fleming slotted in splendidly and dotted down on four occasions, while skipper Arnold van den Berg led from the front and chipped in with two tries of his own.

The club will welcome the same opponents to their home ground for the reverse fixtures on Saturday, July 18, with the u-21 match at 1.15pm, second team clash at 2.45pm and the first team clash at 4pm.
