Young Northerns outfit outplayed

It’s been a tough season for first team coach Jannie van den Berg and his Benoni Northerns Football Club (BNFC) outfit.

Benoni Northern’s first team player Matome “Dukes” Maila (in red) takes on two Randburg players in the team’s defeat by Randburg on Saturday.

Injuries all season long, the departure of talismanic striker Brogan Shrimpton to the USA and player commitment to training have caused frustration for van den Berg, whose side was top of the ELFA Super League in the early stages of the league.

Since then he has had to make do with promoting numerous youngsters into the first team set-up.

On Saturday, June 20, at Benoni Northerns, the team suffered another defeat, this time a 5-2 loss to high-flying Randburg.

“They [Randburg] are a really good side and are fighting for top honours in the league, so it was never going to be easy for us,” said the coach.
