Maintaining a past, building a future at Benoni Country Club

Like a juvenile springbok on a Benoni fairway, stalwart sports club Benoni Country Club (BCC) is bouncing into new life.

With new chief executive officer (CEO) and golf director Darren Millington at the helm (since March 2) the club is looking to build on its 107-year-old history and flourish into the number one family facility in the Ekurhuleni region.

“Being CEO has its challenges, but there’s nowhere else I’d rather be,” said Millington, a man who has grown up, attended school and lives in Benoni.

“It’s great to be home and to be in a position like I am at such a wonderful facility.”

The new CEO made the move from Germiston Golf Club, where he served as the head professional and as the general manager for a number of years.

He also served an 11-year stint at Pollak Park, in Springs, before moving to Germiston.

On his new role at BCC, Millington commented: “We are the only true country club in Ekurhuleni, with a 1 700-odd membership across our sporting disciplines of golf, mountain biking, bowls, tennis and squash.

“Our main aim is to make BCC into a much more family-orientated place to be, hence the more modern changes that we have implemented.”

The club just recently upgraded their upstairs Exec Bar, undertook minor upgrades at the bowls club and some small changes in the banquet hall.

The squash courts have also recently received a top-class revamp, among other new developments, as part of the general upliftment of the facility.

When one thinks “country club”, the mind easily drifts towards golf, but to Millington it is about more than just that.

“There have been some wonderful golfers who have come out of here, but it’s more than about golf here – it’s a sports club, a family,” he explained.

He encouraged all Benonians and visitors to pop into the club at any time, to enjoy the tranquility and natural beauty offered at the facility.

“Our goal (like all clubs) is to retain our membership then grow our numbers; we are striving to be a landmark venue when it comes to the family environment,” Millington added.
