Dam! Duvenage is doing well

Born and bred Benonian Gert Duvenage is hooked on the sport of bank angling - and he’s not doing too badly at it either.

The sport sees individuals or teams competing by fishing in dams, to see who can get the most points in an eight-hour session.

Points are according to fish weight and quantities – 10 points per fish and 10 points per kilogram caught – the most total points win.

Duvenage, who spent most of his childhood fishing in Benoni’s dams, launched his career in 2010, when he started fishing for Avion Angling Club, before moving to Kempton Park Angling Club.

From February to April, last year, he participated in various provincial trial events and was selected for the Central Gauteng C Team.

In January, this year, he competed at the Transvaal Games – a warm-up to the South African nationals, in March.

Only five provinces competed during this one-day event and here Duvenage’s team took the gold medal.

The Benonian was also the runner-up victor ludorum at the event.

In March, he fished in the three-day South African National Championships, held at Bloemhof Dam, where teams from every province competed.

During this tournament Duvenage’s Central Gauteng team again won gold.

The passionate angler was invited to fish at the national trials, based on his 13th overall finish (he is now one of the Top 40 best bank anglers in the country).

In May, Duvenage cast his line at the trials, again at Bloemhof Dam, and found himself selected for the South African Freshwater Bank Angling Federation’s (SAFBAF) B side.

This team will now compete in the grand finale to the season, in September.

“As we are one of only two countries who practice this facet of fishing, we will end the 2014/2015 season fishing a tournament against the Combined Forces teams,” he said.

“These teams are made up of police and defence force members from across the country.”
