‘Nella’ is the new Easterns coach

On Monday, June 8, former Protea fast bowler André Nel commenced his duties as head coach of Eastern Cricket.

Well-known for his no-nonsense, aggressive bowling during his cricket days, the broad-shouldered speedster is set to place his own stamp of authority on the Willowmoore Park-based semi-professional team.

Nicknamed “Nella” by his teammates, the former Test and ODI player has represented Easterns, the Titans and the Lions as a provincial player, as well as English County sides Northamptonshire, Essex and Surrey.

In 2007 he also had a stint with the Mumbai Indians, in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

On Monday, the Eastern Cricket Union issued the following statement:

‘The president and executive directors, in conjunction with the management and staff of Eastern Cricket, take great pleasure in announcing the appointment of André Nel as the new head coach of Eastern Cricket.”

Nel is an accredited CSA Level III coach and brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the position for both the Easterns and the Titans set-up.

“I am thankful for the opportunity to coach the Easterns side,” the Germiston-born coach said.

“I started my playing career here and have now completed the full circle by becoming the coach of the Easterns team.

“My aspiration is to take the team back to the top again.”
