Rugby lessons learned in France

Aqeela Moosa, a former Benoni High School pupil, recently competed in two international women’s sevens rugby tournaments in France, with the University of Pretoria (Tuks) team.

The team played their first tournament in Nancy, and also played against the national teams from Switzerland, Belgium and Norway.

It was a terrific tournament for the Tuks women, as they would go on to win the Plate final.

“By the time we played the second tournament in Paris, the Centrale Tournament, we suffered a few injuries and had no fresh legs,” Moosa told the City Times.

“We did, however, win the Fairplay Trophy.”

In the French capital, Moosa and company played against strong sides, including Portugal and the French second team.

“Women’s sevens rugby in Europe is bigger than back home.

“They have a lot more funding and a lot more girls playing than we do, but we managed to keep up with the national sides and beat the local sides, because of better conditioning and coaching.

“It was also good for us as a team to play on a higher level than we are used to in South Africa, so that we could set higher goals and not become complacent.”

Now that she is home, Moosa is preparing for a possible tour to the Reunion Islands at the end of June and a University Sports South Africa (USSA) tournament later in the year.

The player is also focusing on a national tournament at the end of the year, when she is hoping to play for the Blue Bulls side again, and possibly fall onto the Springboks’ radar.
