Match ‘could have gone either way’

After a good winning run in the ELFA Super League ended last week, against Highlands Park, Benoni Northerns Football Club’s (BNFC) first XI travelled to Kempton Park, to try to get back to winning ways.

It wasn’t to be, however, and coach Jannie van den Berg and his team went down 2-1 in a highly competitive encounter.

“It was a lovely game and the result could have really gone either way,” said the BNFC coach.

“Both goalkeepers pulled off some excellent saves in the match.”

Northerns opened the scoring through an own goal, that deflected off a Kempton defender from a cross from the right flank.

Kempton Park managed to score the equalising goal on the stroke of halftime.

With five minutes to go in a tough second stanza, Kempton scored the winner from a counterattack, after BNFC had had a strike saved by the opposition number one.

“Obviously we are missing an out and out striker with the departure of Brogan Shrimpton to the USA, but we won’t change our methods or thought process,” said van den Berg.

“Sometimes you play well and lose a game – that’s football.”
