Benoni wallop Elsburg

Benoni Rugby Club’s first and second teams played their second match of the 2015 Valke Merlin League when they travelled to Elsburg on Saturday, May 9.

The first XV experienced a shaky start to proceedings in their match, but consolidated well to win quite convincingly with a large 48-0 score line.

The visitors were extremely dangerous on attack and scored their first try within the opening ten minutes, however, they fell into a lull midway into the first half and battled to put phases together and implement their game plan due to some strong Elsburg defending and handling errors.

They would eventually get things together and add another three tries before the break with a score of 24-0.

Benoni continued the momentum in the second half, got a firm grip on the game and ran in another four tries.

Arno Fourie (two), Dirk Bloem (two), Dirk Fourie, Jacques Dorfling, Henri Swarts and Stefan Nienaber all crossed the Elsburg try line.

Ettienne van Staden converted four of the tries.

The second team also had the better of Elsburg and scored seven answered tries.

The team is coming together well as a unit now and some exciting players are emerging.

Morne Venter (three), Quin van der Nest, Tiaan Myburgh, Willie de Ridder and Michael Reicher all scored five-pointers on Saturday, while Willie de Ridder kicked over five conversions and a penalty.

The club’s next fixture will be versus Nigel this coming weekend, which is expected to be a tough encounter.
