Gordinho basks in Chiefs PSL success

Benonian lifts PSL trophy with his club.

Fresh off celebrating his 21st birthday recently Kaizer Chiefs defender Lorenzo Gordinho was soon jumping for joy with his teammates and coaches in Port Elizabeth when his club lifted the Premier Soccer League (PSL) trophy on Saturday, May 9.

The former Benoni High School pupil told the City Times that winning the country’s top football league is a “great feeling”.

“To realise that I have been a part of a winning team and to be a champion in just my second season with the team has given me the thirst and motivation to win more trophies in the future and to perform well enough to be recognised and receive individual accolades,” he said.

Gordinho partnered Chiefs captain Tefu Mashamaite in the centre of defence in the team’s final match of the campaign against Chippa United at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium and received heavy praise from the skipper after the 2-0 win.

The player nicknamed “Freedom” has also represented South Africa at u-17 and u-20 age group level and was a member of the South African u-23 squad that recently played Sudan, but failed to qualify for the 2015 All Africa Games after losing 2-1 on aggregate in their double-leg fixtures recently.

The former St Columba’s pupil added that his goals going forward now are to establish himself further in the Kaizer Chiefs line-up and become a regular in the new season.

“I want to secure my place in the u-23 South African team to be a part of the 2016 Olympic qualifiers,” he said.
