Mixed results for Old Bens

It has been a busy few weeks for coach Raymond Cloete and his Old Bens Football Club first team.

Following defeats in the Benoni Derby cup clash with Northerns and a 1-0 loss to Sporting on Saturday, April 25, the team had been working hard to turn their form around with two ELFA Super League fixtures in the space of three days.

Old Bens welcomed Germiston to Currin Park on the night of Thursday, April 30, and dominated their opposition in a 5-0 crushing.

The hosts opened the scoring in a tight first half through midfielder Thamsanqa Hlatshwayo who latched onto a good corner kick from Jethson Cloete.

Lesiba Modau added the second goal 10 minutes after the break before Hlatshwayo and striker Bilal Hajee Mohammed put Bens 4-0 up.

The last goal came from an excellent individual effort from Sonnyboy Mkwanazi who beat three defenders to slot the ball past the Germiston goalkeeper.

Mohammed Brand was the Man-of-the-Match in this match.

Once again good football was played by both sides.

It was the visitors who would open the scoring in the 20th minute courtesy of a terrific volley from the Randburg striker.

Bens equalised 10 minutes later through fast, one-touch play from Modau and striker Mohammed who found the back of the net.

Both teams pushed hard to win the game in the second stanza.

The hosts were, however, dealt a blow when the referee sent off one of their players and Randburg got the winner soon after.

Old Bens play high-riding Union FC at Currin Park on Saturday, May 8, in the league.
