‘Try’ing hard to grow the game

Aqeela Moosa (21) is a smart, hard working and dedicated medical student at the University of Pretoria (Tuks).

It is unsurprising then to see that this former Benoni High School pupil is also applying those very same characteristics to another passion – women’s sevens rugby.

Moosa has been playing the sport for just over a year now and harbours a dream of wearing the green and gold Springbok women’s sevens jersey, at the Olympic Games, in the not too distant future.

The City Times caught up with the enthusiastic student and sevens player when the Tuks women’s sevens team took on and defeated a Boksburg Rugby Club women’s team 52-0, in a friendly match at Hoërskool Hans Moore, on Saturday, April 11, to find out more about her journey in the sport.

When asked how she got into women’s Sevens rugby, Moosa said: “I went to play touch rugby with a friend of mine at Tuks.

“The Tuks women’s sevens team was training there that day and I saw that it was more my sort of game, as it was a bit more aggressive.

“The sport also offers a lot more opportunity to travel, so that was definitely a big drawcard for me.

“Sevens rugby is not like 15s rugby, where it’s all about how hard you can tackle.

“It’s more of a running and intellectual game and that’s why it appealed to me.”

Questioned about the development of women’s sevens rugby in South Africa at this point in time, she replied: “It is a bit stagnant at the moment, because securing financial support for teams is difficult, because there is still a lot of stigma out there regarding women’s rugby.

“Our squad at Tuks has grown tremendously from last year, so it shows that more and more girls are becoming interested in the sport and creating a bigger and newer market for sponsors to target.”

The Tuks women’s rugby team has been invited to take part in an international women’s sevens rugby tournament in Paris and Nancy, in France, next month, and the team is trying to secure backing to get there.
