It’s all about that Buys

It has been business as usual for Benoni wakeskater Matti Buys, who finished as number one at two recent weekend contests.

His first contest, “Backyard Sessions”, took place on the Umtamvuna River, on the South Coast of Kwa-Zulu Natal.

During qualifying on Friday, March 13, the Benoni High School old boy managed to win his heat and make it through to the semi-finals on the morning of Saturday, March 14.

“After a solid semi-final heat I went through to the four-man final,” he said.

“The format this year was slightly different, but was really awesome, because it allowed us to get in more riding and up the difficulty level.”

Buys added that the skaters had an hour to land their best four-trick run.

After stringing together a great run, Buys was the overall winner.

Following his display in Natal, the Benonian travelled back to Johannesburg for the first stop of the South African Wakeskate Tour, at Stoke City, in Midrand, on Saturday, March 21.

Wakeskaters had to complete a three-trick run during their heats to advance to the next stage.

“We had some windy conditions in the quarter-finals, which made things tough, but I managed to win my heat and advance to the semi-finals where, after a huge storm and load-shedding interfered, I managed to get a ride in and advance to the final.”

Due to the rain, the riders immediately commenced with a four-man final and, in less than favourable conditions, managed to get in a 25-minute final, which should have been an hour long.

Buys pulled out the big tricks in the final and finished in first position, ahead of Kaylib Louw and Jaques Labuschagne.
