Slow-Mag is fast approaching

This year marks the 23rd anniversary of the running of the Slow-Mag Marathon, which will be taking place on Sunday, April 26.

The race comprises a 5km fun run, 10km, 21.1km, 42.2km marathon and 50km ultra-marathon and has become a popular attraction amongst runners countrywide.

Sponsors Merck (Slow-Mag) have enabled the hosts, Benoni Northern’s Athletic Club (BNAC), to build this into one of South Africa’s most popular Comrades qualifying races.

Introduced four years ago, the 50km distance has proved to be a popular event, gaining more and more athletes each year.

The route is fairly flat, with some long, gentle hills, but is still a reasonably easy run.

The Slow-Mag is well-organised and presented and has been voted as one of South Africa’s top 10 marathons.

There is a walkers’ category for the half-marathon distance and grand masters and blind runners enjoy free entry for this race.

It is a fun day out for the whole family, with catering, coffee, secure parking, bar facilities, children’s entertainment, music and a great overall vibe.

The organisers request that motorists take note of the dates and posters marking the route ahead of time, and be patient and courteous, as there will be traffic disruptions and road closures on the morning.

Start times are 6.30am for the ultra, full and half marathons, 6.40am for the 10km and 5km family fun run.

The race takes place at Benoni Northerns Sports Club.

Prospective runners can pre-enter online at www.enteronline.co.za until Friday, April 17, or enter at local sports shops.

Late entries will be taken at Northerns on Saturday, April 25, from 10am to 5pm, and on the morning of the race from 4.30am (no postal or faxed entries).

Enquiries can be made with the race office on 072 819 2122 or 079 836 4019, or by email at bnacraceorganisers@gmail.com.
