Good and bad news for Actonville

It was a week of good and bad news for Actonville Spurs Cricket Club.

In a week where former player David Wiese earned a big money move to the IPL, the club’s Premier XI suffered defeat against Duduza, at Lord’s Cricket Grounds, on Sunday, February 22.

Duduza won the toss, elected to field first on the now customary slow wicket, at Lords A.

The Actonville batsmen struggled to accelerate the innings throughout their 50 overs, with Charl Prinsloo (40) and Praveshan Chetty (43 not out) offering the only kind of resistance.

The pair put on a 50-run partnership, but Duduza stuck to their task and used the conditions well, restricting Actonville to 155/9.

Duduza’s best bowler was Nhlamhla Nhlapo, with figures of 2/20.

The visitors began the chase after lunch and lost four quick wickets.

A good partnership by Ncamile Livi (33 runs) and Mpho Nzimande (29 not out) got Duduza right into the game.

Actonville’s bad habit of basic bowling and fielding errors continues to plague the team and this led to Duduza chasing down the target, finishing with 156/7 and winning by three wickets.

There was, however, some more positive news in the Actonville and Wattville cricketing world.

The Cricket South Africa (CSA) Centre of Excellence programme, aimed at growing all previously disadvantaged clubs, has been awarded to both clubs.

The Centre of Excellence was awarded by CSA and the Eastern Cricket Union.

This programme will ensure that the centre will have a high quality head coach and assistant coach, in Seun Beya (head coach) and Christopher Israel Hlengani.

The programme will have a direct impact on the junior and senior set-ups at both clubs.

“We are hopeful that, through this programme, a number of future franchises and Proteas will be unearthed,” said Zunaid Seedat, public relations officer at Actonville Spurs Cricket Club.

“Actonville Spurs and Wattville cricket clubs would like to thank CSA and Easterns for selecting us as the Centre of Excellence for our region.”
