United’s batsmen dismantled in Actonville

Actonville bounced back from a poor batting display to claim a bonus-point win.

Actonville Spurs Cricket Club’s Premier XI recovered from a low scoring batting display to win their Eastern Premier League encounter, against Brakpan’s United Cricket Club, on Sunday, November 2, with a bonus point.

Captain Clayton August’s men were put in to bat in overcast weather conditions and struggled early against their opposition bowlers, who stuck to good lengths but for a 35-run partnership between Mathew Nielsen and Michael Enslin, that helped boost the team to a score of 106 all out.

Nielsen (35 runs) was the leading run-scorer for Spurs, while United’s skipper Justin Gamble (three wickets for one run) and JP Meade (two wickets for 23 runs) were the best of the bowlers.

United came in to bat and were 37/2 at lunch.

The lunch break seemingly sparked August’s team into life and they came back out onto the field with renewed vigour and purpose.

The bowlers rallied and dismissed United for 66 all out.

This ensured a bonus point for the home team.

The best of the Actonville bowlers were August (4/15), Xolile Nkomo (3/17) and Priyashen Chetty (2/6).

On Sunday, November 2, Actonville’s Premier XI will have a tough task away against CBC Old Boys.

  • Most of the club’s junior teams enjoyed a good weekend, too.

The u-8 team beat Boksburg by nine wickets (Riyaad Khan 55 not out); the u-10 team beat Kempton Park by four wickets; the u-12 team lost to Kempton by 20 runs, the u-14 team defeated United by nine wickets (Saahil Khan 62 not out and Yateen Valjee 44 runs).

  • In other senior results, the club’s Directors team lost to Kempton Park, while the Second League and Third League teams suffered defeat to Nigel and Kempton Park respectively.
