SAFA Ekurhuleni launches regional u-15 league

New regional league for u-15 footballers is set to grow the game of football in Ekurhuleni.

Aspiring football teams at a development level are set to benefit from a partnership between the Ekurhuleni Metro and the South African Football Association (SAFA).

This will see teams participating in the >SAFA >Ekurhuleni u-15 Regional League given football kits they will use when honouring their fixtures. This is just one of the many initiatives on which SAFA Ekurhuleni intends to embark. The Regional League is the first phase on which SAFA Ekurhuleni will be focusing.

There are other projects that will be unveiled by the regional body in future, however, the current focus is on the u-15 league.

“The decision to embark on this programme is informed by the shared strategic objective between the metro and SAFA Ekurhuleni to implement sport and recreation programmes in communities and schools,” SAFA Ekurhuleni regional executive officer, Job Mchunu said.

“One of the critical lessons we (as a country) have learnt as host of the 2010 FIFA World Cup was the importance of developing our young players and coaches – a model that has been proved in many big leagues across the world.”

He added that SAFA regional structures should remember that SAFA is not only about SAFA House (headquarters), so regional structures must also do their bit in advancing the gospel of football development.

Mchunu further made an appeal to teams who are not affiliated to local football associations (LFA) to join those structures.

“Teams that are currently playing in the regional league were not selected, but they are the league winners from their respective LFAs,” he said.

“It must be emphasised that we intend to link up our regional league with the sport academy systems that the municipality is currently setting up, hence we have roped some of our legends into some of the projects we are currently running.”
