Girls pick up another three points

The Benoni Northerns Football Club girls’ Winter League team travelled to Linmeyer, in the south of Johannesburg, on the night of Friday, August 22, to play Linhill Ladies in their 15th game of the season.

The game was an extremely tough one for coach Neil Senneck’s team, as they encountered a physical side in chilly and windy conditions.

According to Senneck, the girls really stuck to their task of bringing the three points back to Benoni.

The first 20 minutes were quiet, until Kirsten Vermeulen latched onto a well played through ball and beat a defender and the goalkeeper to open the scoring.

This lifted the Northerns girls and they ended the first half having had most of the possession.

Both teams lifted the tempo in the second period, with goalkeeper Boitumelo Moroke making some courageous saves, pinching the ball from the feet of the Linhill strikers.

Northerns scored their second from a quick counterattack, with a ball played up the field from their defence.

Five players were involved in the lead up to Robyn Jackson’s final left-footed strike, to take the score to 2-0.

With four minutes remaining on the clock, Linhill scored their first goal and tried hard to find an equaliser, but the Northerns defence held strong until the referee blew the final whistle to see a 2-1 victory for Senneck’s team.
