BNFC win at home

Benoni Northerns Football Club’s first football team welcomed Alberton to Northern Areas on Saturday, July 12, in an ELFA Super League Senior Division One league encounter.

Coach Flavio Mariuzzi’s men have not had the best of results in recent weeks and bounced back well on Saturday, with a 2-1 win.

Central midfielder and former Mamelodi Sundowns player Manqoba “Shakes” Ngwenya, who recently returned to Northerns, showed his quality as he opened the scoring with a cracking effort that was bent into the top corner of the net from about 30m out.

BNFC went into the second half 1-0 up, but their visitors soon equalised from a good, long range effort that slightly deflected off a Benoni defender.

Northerns’ second goal, from midfielder Michael Edwards, would prove to be the winning one and their coach was particularly pleased with it.

“It was a good team goal that resulted from some nice one-touch passing,” he said.

“It was like training ground stuff and featured fewer than 10 passes in the build up to it.”

He added that the team had chances to completely kill the game, but the Alberton goalkeeper was firm between the posts.

The team is out of the running for the league title and have shifted their attention to their upcoming ELFA Super League Cup quarter-final, away from home to Kempton Park.

“Our finishing has improved and our team spirit is on the up, so we are hoping this will help us pursue our last chance of silverware for the season,” said Mariuzzi.
