Three goals, three points

Old Bens continue their good form with a 3-0 win against Springs.

With a good lead at the top of the ELFA Super League Seniors Division Two table, Old Bens Football Club’s first XI were in bullish mood when they welcomed Springs Old Boys to Currin Park, on Saturday, June 21.

Coach Ray Cloete’s team was out of the blocks early on and started the game in top gear.

Within the first 10 minutes, Mohammed Brand turned a Springs centre back and lashed a screamer into the top corner of the goal.

Bens never stopped applying the pressure and went into the first half 1-0 up.

In the second half, the home team scored within two minutes, courtesy of some good work down the right flank, that culminated in striker Lesiba Modau striking a left-footed volley into the top left corner, to double their advantage at 2-0.

Springs had no answers for Old Bens and, midway through the second half, they conceded their third, when Eduardo Mendes slotted home for Bens’ third goal of the game.

The Old Bens defence and midfield never allowed Springs to come close to goal, with only one shot on target throughout the entire game.

After Mendes’ goal, the match seemed to peter out, with both teams playing a long ball game, with no direction, until the referee called a halt to proceedings, with the final score at 3-0 in favour of Old Bens.

Mendes was chosen as the Man of the Match.

This Saturday, June 28, Cloete’s team will face a totally different proposition, when they play Alberton FC in the ELFA Super League Cup, at Currin Park.

Alberton are well positioned in Super League Division One and the coach expects a more physical and much faster encounter.

“We hope to continue to play good football and make Alberton work hard for any sort of result,” said Cloete.

The match will kick-off at 3pm, with the reserve team opening proceeding with an ELFA Reserves Cup game against Olympia reserves, at 1.30pm.
