“Tommy Gun” pitted against Shihepo in Super 6
An outstanding mix of world-class fighters make up the starting list for the R5-million “Super 6 Clash for Cash” light-heavyweight tournament which was announced at Emperors Palace, recently.
The knock-out tournament, which will stretch across three months (August, September and November), will kick-off on August 9, at Emperors Palace, and see three local boxers test their fortitude against three foreign imports.
The six boxers have been seeded, with Lakefield resident Tommy Oosthuizen put in the highest spot, which will see the new light-heavyweight take on Namibia international Wilbeforce Shihepo in the first round.
“I’m very glad to be in this Super Six tournament,” said the former IBO super middleweight champion.
“In reality, if you put a Tommy Gun in the ring with a lion, then the lion dies, because this is reality; it’s not a fairytale,” he said at the press conference, much to the amusement of those in attendance.
Speaking about his opponent, Oosthuizen added: “He shows no respect, not only to his opponent, but also not to the rules of boxing.
“I saw him against Johnny Muller earlier this year, but we’ll be prepared and we’re going to cut him down.”
WBC International Silver champion Muller has been pitted against Argentinian Roberto Bolonti, with Ryno Liebenberg and Russia’s Denis Grachev battling it out in the final match of the first round.
First-round boxers will each receive R250 000; second round boxers will each receive R350 000 and the overall winner will cash in R1m on the final night, with R500 000 going to the runner-up.
Golden Gloves boss Rodney Berman announced that the winner will also earn a berth on a Monte Carlo fight card, next February.
