Opperman brace secures draw

Benoni Northerns' girls' Winter League team earned a 2-2 draw in Florida.

Benoni Northerns Football Club’s girls’ Winter League team travelled to Florida, to play Florida Ladies, in what was a hard and physical league game, on Friday, June 6.

The girls stood up to the challenge, after going down 2-1 down in the first half.

The Northerns players regrouped at the break and, after some positional changes, came out firing in the second period, which they dominated, courtesy of some fantastic wing-play and excellent crosses into the penalty area.

One such cross from a corner forced a penalty from a deliberate Florida handball, which prevented a header from going in.

Chané Opperman, who scored the team’s first goal (a screamer from about 15m out), stepped up and slotted the penalty for her second goal of the night.

The match ended at 2-2, with coach Neil Senneck highly impressed with the team’s display and evident growth.
