Drawn result keeps Old Bens on top

Old Bens remain in first place in their league, with a 2-2 draw on Saturday.

Old Bens Football Club’s first XI faced Edenvale in the ELFA Super League Seniors Division Two, at Currin Park, on Saturday, June 7.

The game started with both sides on the attack, with a number of early chances and some good goalkeeping from both teams’ glovemen.

A change in formation by coach Ray Cloete, midway through the first period, saw the home team finishing the half strongly, but the teams went into the break goalless.

Edenvale scored a header from a corner early in the second stanza, but Bens managed to equalise shortly after following numerous crosses into the box from Jethson Cloete and Eduardo Mendes.

Happy Thipe scored the first goal from a Cloete cross, and this seemed to spark both teams into full-out attack mode.

Aggressive tackles flew in thereafter, and an Edenvale player was shown a red card.

Despite being a player down, Edenvale found the back of the net 10 minutes later, following a defensive error from Old Bens.

A second yellow card for the Bens left-back evened out the playing field and, with 15 minutes remaining, the home team was awarded a corner that resulted in Dumisane Chauke levelling the score from a good volley inside the small box.

The game would end at 2-2, with Kenny Masieku earning the Man of the Match award.

With Germiston City losing away, to Springs Old Boys, the result has played in the favour of Old Bens, who remain at the top of the league table.

Cloete’s team will now face the same Germiston team, at Old Bens, on Saturday, June 14, in an encounter they must win to stretch their lead.

n Meanwhile, the Old Bens second XI beat Edenvale 1-0 in the earlier game on the day.
