Legends return to the pitch

Former heroes of Actonville Spurs Cricket Club were invited to enjoy a game at the Lords Cricket Ground, in Actonville, on Sunday, May 11.

The executive committee of the club has just come through a busy cricketing year and the idea of a “Legends” match was initiated to celebrate and mark the achievements of the club’s stalwarts.

The legends contingent included Yahya Seedat, Tahir Jamal, Moosa Ghanchi, Baboo Teladia, Martine Shahaboodien, Feroz Aerington, Ashraf Ali, Adam Wadee, Yuri Limalia, Hussain Dawjee and many others.

These were the players who catapulted Actonville Spurs onto the cricket scene, way back in the mid ’80s and late ’90s and millennium year.

The game was played in the true spirit of cricket and thoroughly enjoyed.

The legends had time to reminisce over their Premier League playing days and this will now become an annual event.

“Club cricket appears to be gradually losing popularity, but the Actonville Spurs brand is growing stronger,” said club public relations officer Zunaid Seedat.

“This event will be hosted twice a year as from this coming season, and we will invite all our ex-players, who come from the Gauteng region, to play.

“The club will also be looking at inviting teams from other areas, like Johannesburg and Lenasia, to play each other.”

  • The club’s annual general meeting took place on Sunday, May 25, and newly elected executive members for the next two years are: Abdul Raheman Data (chairman), Nayan Parbhoo (junior secretary), Aarif Elemdeen (club captain), Kirti Patel (junior coordinator), Suhail Bhoola (treasurer), Zunaid Seedat (public relations), Ahmed Delair (DC officer) and Farhaad Omarjee (head of maintenance).
