Wrestling champs held at John Barrable Hall

The Eastern Gauteng Wrestling Association hosted their annual wrestling championships, the Eastern Gauteng Open at the John Barrable Hall on Saturday.

The event is one of the largest championships on the amateur wrestling calendar and some of the country’s top wrestlers participate in the event each year.

Nico Coetzee, Eastern Gauteng Wrestling and national head coach, said that the championships provide the perfect warm-up for a number of

local wrestlers who will be taking part in the Junior and Cadet Africa Championship in Alexandria, Egypt, from May 16 to May 25.

In the open senior men’s categories the winners were Kleinjan Combrink (57 to 61kg), Roelof Crous (61 to 65kg), Bennie Matthysen (70 to 74kg), Richard Addinall (74 to 86kg) and Justin van Zyl (86 to 97kg).

In the women’s categories the winners were Lezandri Zandberg (39 to 42kg), Patricia Theledi (46 to 50kg), Belinda Benson (50 to

54kg), Marista van Tonder (54 to 58kg), Mpho Madi (58 to 65kg) and Zumicke Geringer (65 to 72kg).
