Rugby teams tested by TUT

The Assupol Super Club Series kicked off at the weekend, with Benoni Rugby Club’s three teams travelling to the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) on Saturday, March 1, in their first competitive encounter of 2014.

The tournament is a hotly contested one between clubs from the rugby unions of the Golden Lions, Blue Bulls, Leopards and Valke.

Benoni’s First XV stood up well against the students in Pretoria, in an extremely hard-fought match.

It rained for the majority of the game and the wet conditions seemed to level out the match.

The players took the game to a very fit and well-conditioned TUT outfit and kept the pressure up for most of the match.

Benoni’s Morne Rossouw scored all of the points for the away team, slotting three penalties.

The firsts, however, could not hold out their student opponents, who secured a 22-9 victory.

The u-21 team was in for a much more difficult day at the office, as a well-drilled young TUT team took them to the sword, winning 83-0.

Steve Myburgh, Benoni Rugby Club’s public relations officer, said that TUT’s advantages of being able to train at least three times a day and having daily gym-time available was clearly evident in this encounter.

“Credit must go to our guys for trying their best,” he said.

“Performances will get better as the season progresses.”

Benoni’s second team played well in their match but were not strong enough as they went down by 24-14.

The club’s first home fixture will take place against NWU Vaal Pukke, at Hoërskool Hans Moore, on Saturday, March 8, and rugby fans are encouraged to come down and support the local teams.
