Favourite leads after round one

The South African Stroke Play Championship has come to Benoni Country Club and after the first round of play on Tuesday, February 4, it was South Africa’s number one amateur and tournament favourite Christiaan Bezuidenhout who lead from the front.

Bezuidenhout racked up eight birdies in a wonderful eight-under-par display.

The 19-year-old from Nigel known to his amateur peers as Rambo produced a wonderful round of golf to lead Ireland’s Chris Selfridge.

He also leads 17-year-old Scottish amateur Ewen Ferguson .

“I just played really well, especially off the tee and my short game,” said Bezuidenhout.

“I missed just two fairways and had 26 putts, so not a bad day at the office, at all.”

“You want to get your hands on every trophy you play for, and especially the SA Stroke Play or Match Play trophies, but this game doesn’t really work like that,” said Bezuidenhout.

“It was nice to start with a solid round and put myself in a strong position.

“My short game was really good, especially the putts and I think eight under is a good position to be in.”

Amateurs that play out of Benoni-based clubs are also taking part in the tournament:

Ebotse Golf and Country Estate’s Kevin Smith was tie 15 after his first round after shooting two-under, while Benoni Country Club’s Frederick Dorfling was tie 115 after shooting seven-over par on day one.
