Thompson triumphs on the kart track

St Dunstan’s College Grade Seven pupil Delon Thompson (13) was recently crowned the 2013 Northern Region Karting Champion, in the Minirok 60cc class.

Thompson placed second in the South African National Karting Championship after narrowly losing out to first place by a couple of points.

He has been on the podium in all the races in which he took part this year.

The Minirok class is the most competitive class in South African karting, with well over 50 drivers.

He also qualified with Motor Sport South Africa to take part in the 2013 Rok World Cup karting event in Lonato, Italy, from October 17 to 19.

Thompson was very competitive in Italy, featuring in the top 15 throughout all the qualifying races and knock-out rounds.

He qualified in 13th position, to make the final, but, unfortunately, got bumped off in the first lap and managed 28th place of the 78 drivers who competed from all around the world

The teenager has been karting only since 2011 and will move up to a bigger class (the 125cc class) next year.
