First defeat for Actonville

Actonville Spurs Cricket Club took on Springs Old Boys, away from home, on Sunday, November 3.

Actonville were looking to continue their recent good form in Springs.

Old Boys won the toss and, surprisingly, chose to bat in bowler-friendly conditions.

Actonville’s bowlers did not uitilise the conditions well and the Springs batsmen weathered the Actonville storm (aided by a few Spurs’ fielding lapses) to set a total of 284/10, with best scores from Dalton Smallburger (84), JP de Klerk (51) and Vickus Germishuizen (50).

Lafias Moolman managed figures of 5/41, skipper Theo Naidoo (2/46) and Xolile Nkomo (2/42).

Actonville came in to chase the big total, but Springs Old Boys bowlers made home advantage count by using the still friendly bowling conditions.

Actonville capitulated for a paltry 168 /10, with Ahmed “Jogee” Mohammed top scoring with 53 and Moolman scoring 30.

The Actonville team were defeated by 116 runs.

Spurs will next take on Benoni Northerns, at Lords Cricket Ground, in the local derby.

The players will be ready for the derby and will have to improve on this last performance if they are to remain in the higher echelons of the league.
