Gerber conquers Ebotse

Bethlehem's Divan Gerber is definitely a golfer to keep an eye on, and his victory at the Sunshine Big Easy Tour Championship final, held at Ebotse Links, and subsequent Order of Merit win, proves his ability.

At the end of the R250 000 tournament the top five players on the Order of Merit received Sunshine Tour cards for the 2014 season.

Gerber began the week looking to secure a card, but his goals shifted with the prospect of a victory looming.

The Big Easy Tour final took place at Ebotse, from Wednesday, October 23, to Friday, October 25, and pitted 30 of the country’s upcoming professional golfers against each other.

Gerber carded a 67 on Wednesday, to lead the first round at the Tour Championships and never looked back.

He shot a Thursday 72 and a Friday 70 to claim the victory and secure the Order of Merit.

“I did not know I had won the order of merit,” said Gerber.

“We’ve got this win in the bag and that’s the cherry on the cake.

“I just wanted to ensure that I placed in the top five and kept my Sunshine Tour card for next year.”

The champion will now take a short break in December, before setting his sights on playing with the “big boys” on the main Sunshine Tour.

Benoni golfer Dean O’Riley finished joint fifth with Neil Cheetham, from England, after shooting a 74 on Wednesday, 73 on Thursday and a mighty impressive 65 on the final day.
