Bad day in Nigel

Benoni Rugby Club had another bad day at the office in Nigel, on Saturday, August 24.

The Benoni teams could not manage any wins in the three games in which they played on the day.

The first XV again made life difficult for themselves by not converting possession into points.

Nigel took the lead in the 10th minute and it was not until the 33rd that Quin van der Nest opened the scoring for Benoni with a try.

With the half time score at 5-6 to Nigel, the visitors felt that they were still in the game, but

Nigel came out strongly in the second half and put a lot of pressure on Benoni.

They scored a try and a penalty in the first 20 minutes, before Takkies van Staden went over to put Benoni back in contention, but Nigel immediately came back with two tries and a penalty.

With the game slipping away from Benoni and with five minutes to go, van der Nest and fullback Mornay Rossouw nearly won the game for Benoni, but they had left it too late, eventually losing out 26-31.

Benoni hooker Barry van Tonder enjoyed a very good game.

The team left another victory on the field and have relatively little chance of getting into the play-offs this year.

Benoni’s second team were unlucky to lose their game against Nigel, as the stand-in referee let play go on well past full time.

It was another see-saw affair, with the lead changing a few times.

Benoni eventually took the lead in the game in what they thought was the last minute, but the referee had other ideas and gave Nigel two attempts at the posts, of which they needed only one.

They slotted in a heart-breaking penalty and took victory out of Benoni’s hands.

Benoni’s tries were scored by hooker Wessel Duvenage, Jaco Havenga and Man of the Match FL van Greunen.

The Benoni u-21s had another hard day, losing their match 56-0.

With only one more game to play, at home, against Vaal Reefs, on Saturday, August 31, the teams can go out and enjoy the final match of the season.
