Concerned resident writes to the City Times:

I am contacting you at this time to report reckless driving and drag racing in the area and surrounds of Sarel Cilliers and Launder streets, Morehill in the vicinity of Ebotse and Rynfield Dam.

This problem has been going on for some time now, is particularly prevalent during late afternoons and often continues into the early hours of the morning, especially over weekends.

There seems to be a number of drivers (in) high performance sports cars undertaking this dangerous past-time and I feel it is only a matter of time before a serious accident occurs.

The noise that these vehicles make is unacceptable and problematic, more so, when it can be heard late at night.

I have tried to contact Ekurhuleni Traffic Department to lodge a complaint about this problem, but I have been unable to find the correct contact person to send the complaint to.

Maybe you know who to contact?

Some years ago, I remember that the traffic department had a patrolling officer in an unmarked vehicle who did a good job in policing the Morehill/Rynfield areas and who was active in controlling this problem.

Your help in bringing this issue to the attention of the relevant authority would be most appreciated.

Editor’s note:

The City Times asked the EMPD communications team for comment:

As EMPD, were not aware of vehicles dicing at Morehill.

On Friday, Saturday and Sunday (July 10 to July 12), the area was saturated by two officers assigned for that complaint. A few sports cars were identified and when they saw EMPD vehicles they drove off.

Through interviewing the bystanders, it was indicated that in Apex, dicing takes place on Wednesday and Friday evening.

There will be constant monitoring from now onwards in both Apex and Morehill.

The EMPD JOC contact number is 011 999 8498/8660 (24-hour service).
