LETTER: Sad to see Homestead in this state

Homestead Dam needs to be maintained.

Karen Tapella writes:

I read page two of your May 4 edition, it was with great sadness to see the condition of Homestead Dam.

The photos show the deterioration of facilities and the park itself but no mention is made of the prolific hyacinth growth on the dam itself.

An attempt was made sometime last year to clear the growth but it was halted midway, leaving the residents of the western shore to clear away the mess at their expense.

Another concern I would like to raise is the explosion in the population of Egyptian geese and white geese as nothing has been done to keep the numbers down.

Once again, I point to your May 4 edition (page three) where the three birds mentioned at Korsman’s Bird Sanctuary used to frequent Homestead Dam along with many other birds, the like of which we haven’t seen for many a year.

I am quite sure that between the two facts mentioned above it has changed the habitat for the birdlife of this once beautiful and scenic spot.
