How water-wise are you?

It’s not until you’re chucked into the deep end that you really start to swim.

Capetonians don’t have the luxury of deep water, though, but they’ve had to tread the little water they have.

I was exposed to the water restrictions on a recent visit to the Mother City.

Preparing myself mentally for short showers and the “if it’s yellow let it mellow” scenario was daunting, but in practice, it’s doable.

While there, I realised the extent to which we (Gautengers) waste water.

Or am I talking for myself?

Do you let the tap run while brushing your teeth?

Perhaps not, but I bet there is a strong steam of water which mostly goes to waste.

I have learnt you need less than a cup of water to walk out of the bathroom with clean teeth.

What happens to all the cold water needed to flush through pipes before you step into the shower?

Well, those in the Western Cape will tell you it’s a piece of cake to catch a lot of water in a bucket which is placed in the shower.

To further save the precious resource, people are expected to wet themselves, switch off the taps, soap up, rise and… klaar – quite achievable in less than a minute.

A message for every person travelling to the Western Cape this holiday

Lessons, lessons, lessons and a renewed appreciation is what I brought home from my trip to the beautiful city.

What better place would the world be if every person pulled their weight to reduce their carbon footprint, use less resources and have a mindset of saving?

I hope the guys and girls further south get water soon, and when they do, continue their mission to use even less water.
