Wheelie bins are bashed around

Jan de Beer writes:

The manufacturers of Benoni’s wheelie bins should use the performance of their product in our city as a quality control case study for durability.

The excessively rough – brutal, in fact – treatment of wheelie bins by Benoni municipal refuse collectors will have one conclusion: the bin lids will break off and ratepayers will not only have to pay for a new bin but also face the laborious exercise of purchasing a new one.

This may not happen in a month or two, but it is inevitable.

The Ekurhuleni metro recently told the Benoni City Times that residents would have to pay R391 plus a 20 per cent admin fee to replace a lost or stolen bin.

Presumably, this is still the case and also applies to damaged bins.

Although refuse collection is not a prestigious job with tender loving care as a prerequisite, ratepayers actually pay for this service and therefore would expect some order and civility in its execution.

They would also expect emptied bins to be left where – or at least, near – the front gates they were placed for collection.

A recent morning I had to retrieve our bin about 30m down the road: on a neighbour’s lawn, with the lid open.

Further down the street, bins had been left right on the road.

Many Benonians have tried to add identity to their bins through the attachment of attractive stick-on numerals.

Witnessing just one savage onslaught on the wheelie bins by the collection teams would give an indication of how long such numerals will remain readable or intact.

But never mind, soon your doorbell will ring with pleas for Christmas bonuses.

When that happens, chances are your wheelie bin will have its lid on, and be beautifully in place at your front gate.
