Litter flows into dam

Lynn Kennedy writes:

It was with shock and disbelief that I opened the curtains on a recent Tuesday morning after the severe storm and saw the state of Homestead Dam at the inflow end on Mercury Street.

My family had cleaned this end only weeks before and there was not a piece of plastic or any glass bottles left.

I can only assume that all the new debris was washed down from the stream north of Mercury Street in Boksburg which was recently renovated.

Having been born in Benoni and having lived here for over 60 years, one wonders what has happened to the parks’ cleaning staff who you would see on a regular basis, not only cleaning the parks but cleaning kerbs and drainage inlets.

My family and I were armed with our pool net and went to do a clean up on the Wednesday, but unfortunately, after filling a few black bags, we could no longer reach the debris and decided that we would have to wait for it to hopefully move closer to the edge of the water.

In the meantime, the poor fish, bullfrogs, ducks and geese are taking their chances.

Perhaps the council could get a special cleaning team out, seeing this should be covered by what we pay in rates every month.

In closing, the trolley man who collected the bags off the pavement was very grateful – that’s what you call recycling.
