BLOG: LG’s ‘Keeping up with Benoni’s Kardashians’ #MarriedInAFlash

Logan Green, journalist, writes:

If you were given R75 000 to plan your wedding in a mere three days (with TV cameras constantly in your face), would you handle the pressure or crumble like a Benoni Agricultural Holdings road?

The Robeys steal the show

This was the reality that faced two of my lovebird friends and housemates after they were selected for SABC 3’s new wedding show, ‘Married in a Flash’.

The first episode of the show aired on SABC 3 on Wednesday night (you might have seen it) and guess which South African place set the scene for the grand opening?

Korrek!

B-Town, City of Lakes, ’Noni, BenCity, Benoni!

Now, before I tell you about the show, let me set the scene for you about how this all started…

Get your popcorn ready, ladies and Germans, this is LG’s ‘Keeping up with Benoni’s Kardashians’.

Allow me introduce you to my pal, Mark Harold Robey (aka Robey, aka Harold, aka Robez).

At six-foot nine the man is a giant and you simply cannot miss him.

Not only is his physical size gargantuan, but his personality is just as immense.

A size and height comparison between LG and Robey on the rugby field, for reference.

The boy absolutely hates a jol! (Sarcasm ;) )

This is how we became pals (naturally).

Anyway, in 2015 Harold was having way too much fun at places where booze is sold like Benoni Northerns, the old Keg and Hi-Flyerz (eish!).

He then decided to play swipey swipey on a dating app and, little did he know at the time, one right swipe would change his life forever.

Because, with that swipe came his princess, the love of his life, Sheila-Ann Roos, a no-nonsense taking bird from Pretoria with a personality just as colossal as ‘Robezilla’ himself.

They connected and fell in love, quite like LG and beer.

Fast-forward just over two years to a quiet Wednesday afternoon in September 2017.

Picture the scene (yes, I am talking in the third-person here):

Your boy LG has had a long day at the office and heads home to put his feet up before a chilled run.

He arrives home to find a camera crew pointing their fancy machines all over the place and a pretty presenter interviewing his housemates.

He is informed that his housemates are getting hitched – on the Saturday afternoon!

Saturday!

Three days away!

On national TV!

This is where the panic was supposed to kick in, but, nay…

Us Benonians are too chilled for nonsense, we rallied together like offended people on Facebook comments.

From organising a venue to an absolutely raucous bachelor’s party to the simple things like washing 100 plastic chairs, we did it.

The wedding was a tremendous spectacle and absolutely beautiful.

I even shed some tears at the ceremony (which was caught on camera for the entire nation to see!).

There goes my macho reputation! :P

The groomsmen totally rocked their Mr Price attire, how ’bout a sponsorship there, Mr Price? (Or should we speak to Mrs Price rather?)

Hell, even so-called “Black Twitter” loved it (mostly):

#MarriedInAFlash

I cannot wait to see the rest of the season and see how Benoni stacks up against the rest of South Africa.

Episodes air at 7.30pm every Wednesday on SABC 3.

Thanks to every Benonian who made it happen.

Thanks for making my friends’ dreams come true.

See you again when I some day get married…

Just kidding!

That means I would probably never blog again..

Peace and love!

LG
