Men scam woman in Western Extension

Les Wallace writes:

I would like to share this incident as a warning to my fellow Western Extension residents and visitors, who I’m sure would never be as stupid as I was.

I was approached by a scruffy looking individual on a recent Sunday morning, while parked at the cafe on Elston Avenue.

He offered to get rid of the scratches on my car if I would just give him five minutes.

He proceeded to wipe and polish with his ‘magic potion’ and indeed, many, although not all, were removed, for which he charged ‘only’ R400, which then became R600 because he’d polished ‘a lot more’.

I refused to pay this, but did cough up some hard earned cash to cover his first ‘quote’.

By now he had been joined by a friend and they quickly left, probably to the nearest drug dealer.

Another gentleman then asked me what had happened.

When I told him that I had actually paid this character he was horrified.

He told me that as soon as I washed my car, the scratches would reappear.

He said this pair had been in the area for a while with the same scam.

Be on the lookout for two males.

One is tallish with scraggly blondish hair, a beard and moustache.

He chews constantly and speaks rapidly and his friend is slightly shorter, also with light hair.

I decided that I was not going to beat myself up about falling for their scam; life is too short.

However, I did repeat for the rest of the day, “When you lose, hold onto the lesson.”

Editor’s note:

Benoni SAPS spokesperson, Capt Nomsa Sekele, said police have not received reports of this apparent scam.
