Bins are a benefit

There has been so much negativity surrounding the roll-out of the wheelie bins.

One of the complaints is that the rubbish does not fit in one bin, but I believe that this is one of the positive aspects of the bins as it forces us to think about the waste we generate in our homes.

Because our household already recycles paper, glass, tin, plastics and electronics, we have only one little supermarket bag of waste.

However, we have in the past had several bags of garden refuse.

I am not inclined to pay for more than one bin, so I am now having to rethink how we handle garden refuse.

We have already been making compost with kitchen waste, but will now be expanding this to include grass cuttings and leaves.

It’s easy to recycle – for paper, just get a bag from Mpact (toll-free 0800 022 112) and put it out on the specified day.

Plastic can be put separately on your pavement on pick-up day and you will be helping the pickers.

Personally, I support the wheelie bin roll-out, as it is neater to store garbage until pick-up day, it is easier to put out, and there is already less litter on the Farrarmere streets from ripped bags.
