Council must deliver wheelie bins

T A Knobel, of Rynfield, writes:

Driving through the streets of Rynfield, one can immediately see that the wheelie bin experiment is a failure.

There are numerous households that produce on a weekly basis many more bags of rubble than can be taken up by a single wheelie bin.

Some households may need, it seems, up to five or six wheelie bins to meet their requirements.

The Benoni community is headed for a potential health hazard if the number of excess rubble bags are not removed.

For example, this excess is likely to result in a boom in the number of rats and mice, with the diseases that they bring with them.

That places the people of Benoni at grave risk and the Ekurhuleni council could end up in contravention of health laws.

There is a simple solution.

Firstly, the council should immediately send out its refuse trucks to remove all excess refuse bags, including those from households that have not yet obtained wheelie bins.

Secondly, the municipality should provide ratepayers with the opportunity to take up as many wheelie bins [as they need] to meet their requirements.

These wheelie bins should be delivered by the council to these households, as the council has the logistical means to do so.

It is an insult to the ratepayers that they be required to collect the wheelie bins as they do not have the means to transport additional numbers of wheelie bins.

The council must not forget that it is the ratepayers who keep them in business.

We pay your salaries and council expenses.

The Ekurhuleni Council must serve its ratepayers.

Editor’s note:

The letter was sent to the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality on June 14, but no comment was received at the time of going to print.
