Maybe the SPCA should drop its prices

J Doran writes:

I read the article about the Benoni SPCA and how the public can help.

I would like to share an observation I made when donating items to various charity shops.

The Hospice East Rand charity shop in Rynfield receives and sells similar items to the SPCA charity shop with one difference – the items at the Hospice shop fly off the shelves in the matter of a day because of the ridiculously low prices, especially those of the clothes.

There’s no opportunity to go back to buy something at a later stage because it will be gone.

Perhaps it would be better for the SPCA charity shop to note that it’s more lucrative to sell more stock at a much lower price than sit with stock hoping to sell at a higher price.

Also, a large percentage of potential buyers looking for a bargain have to work until 3pm and, when they walk past the SPCA shop, it’s closed.

Just sit outside the Hospice shop on a Friday afternoon and you’ll see what I mean.

I hope this helps.

Editor’s note:

Shelley Owens, co-chairperson of the Benoni SPCA, replies:

“We thank the writer for their observation.

“The committee has reviewed this on a few occasions and we feel that our shop offers quality goods, and many of our regular customers are antique or other dealers who resell the items.

“We feel we have an excellent relationship with our customers and they seem happy, as we are.

“We would like to thank the public for their continuous support.

“Should anybody have some spare time and would like to offer their services in helping at the shop, please contact the Benoni SPCA on 011 894 2814/5.”
